About

Antonin De Bemels’ artistic career spans more than two decades, during which he has played many roles: video artist, VJ, DJ, composer, sound designer, live performer, writer, mask maker... His work is defined by the urge to express himself, whatever the medium, with a particular attention to the audience, with whom he always tries to create an emotional bound.

At the start of his career, Antonin had the chance to be part of Brussels' underground music scene, which was in full swing in the early 2000s. He was involved with several cutting-edge labels or collectives such as Elf Cut, KRAAK, Foton or Meakusma. He also worked in close connection with the contemporary dance sector, also known for being ahead of the curve in Belgium.

But the most defining moment in Antonin’s musical trajectory came when, for the release party of his solo album "La fin des pseudonymes", he invited drummer Olivier Taskin to join him. This marks the beginning of an ongoing series of inspiring collaborations, as Antonin's studio became a meeting place for adventurous musicians in search of new challenges. What came out of the various impro sessions that took place there were several EPs and what he calls his "variable-geometry band", Les Antonymes.

"While most electronic music producers usually speak with the technique and what influences them, Antonin De Bemels' language is intuitive and more importantly, free..."

Music

Antonin De Bemels’ discography showcases remarkable versatility, ranging from experimental ambient to tribal techno to minimalist piano, often within the same album. And when improvising with his fellow musicians, it goes in a more "post" way: post rock, post dub, post trip-hop, post blues…

About music production per se, it all started - at the end of the 90s - with FM synthesis and other forms of digital processing. Antonin’s very first compositions were made using rudimentary video editing software, laboriously, piece by piece, without a tempo or looping system like in modern DAWs, which he was only to discover later. Now he uses a combination of field recordings, acoustic instruments like piano or harmonica, and electronic devices such as the Roland TR-8s groovebox or Asturia’s Microfreak.

Video

Antonin De Bemels pursued formal education in multimedia arts, earning a degree from ERG, École de Recherche Graphique, in 1997. There he discovered experimental cinema and video art and decided to follow that path. Soon after graduating from art school, he met Bud Blumenthal, an American dancer and choreographer based in Belgium, and together they created several dance and video pieces. This collaboration was the foundation of Antonin's personal approach to video art, based on the representation of body movements and the dynamic relationship between sounds and images.

As a videographer, Antonin De Bemels has a long-standing habit of working with dancers and choreographers, but also with musicians of the more adventurous persuasion, such as Martiens Go Home, Rawakari, Rob(u)rang, Acid Kirk and Peter Van Hoesen.
